During the week of Apr. 29th, 2019 thru May 3rd, 2019, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and multiple international partners have simulated an “asteroid impact exercise” wherein they will employ a scenario of what they call an “asteroid” impacting Earth.
According to the NASA website: “This week at the 2019 Planetary Defense Conference, conference participants were tasked with responding to a hypothetical asteroid impact scenario in which they have eight years to stop an asteroid on a collision course with Earth.”
This conference, hosted by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), aims to: “Foster the development of astronautics for peaceful purposes; Recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves in space science or technology; Provide a program through which members may contribute to international endeavors; Promote international cooperation in the advancement of aerospace science.”
The conference lasted all this week, and focused on the hypothetical impact scenario of an “asteroid” impacting Earth in the 2020s. Participants also discussed the financial, economical, and human consequences of an impact over a large, densely populated area like New York City.
