The United States is deploying an assault ship and a missile battery to the Persian Gulf to bolster other military vessels already in the area. The US said the move is in response to a possible threat to US forces in the region by Iran, but didn't specify the nature of that threat. Iran has dismissed the claim. The newly deployed vessels are the USS Arlington, which transports marines and conventional landing craft, as well as the Patriot air defense system. They will join the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier that's already there. Though US President Donald Trump campaigned against wars in the Middle East, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton are noted hawks. So who is making the decisions?
