The monarch was speaking with some of the 160 guests invited to Buckingham Palace on Tuesday to celebrate the contribution faith groups make to life in Britain. Anna Dyson, who started a cafe called ToastLoveCoffee, from Leeds was at the event and said the Queen said that “a bit of tea and toast can go a long way”. The cafe gives out coffee and toast to customers who offer their money, time or a skill to help others. According to People, the Queen said she believed food was a good way to bring people from different faiths and traditions together. Nighat Khan, from New Vision 4 Women, said to reporters: “She wanted to know all about our projects and the challenges the women we work with face. We thanked her for the lovely opportunity, and she said this is a good way of connecting and that we should all talk to each other and we can help each other in the future.” The Queen’s use of food to bring people together is something she has in common with her grandson’s wife, Meghan Markle. Ms Markle made a fundraising cookbook, Together: Our Community Cookbook, which raised funds to benefit the community surrounding Grenfell Tower. The Queen offered the finest foods when she hosted a state dinner when President Donald Trump visited the country earlier this month where guests dined on halibut, Windsor lamb and strawberry sable. When the Duchess of Sussex was hosting her friend and make up artist Daniel Martin earlier this year, he shared a picture of the mean which included a pot of tea and avocado toast. Former chef in the royal kitchens, Darren McGrady, has said the Queen is not much of a “foodie”. He has said: “The Queen is not a foodie. She eats to live, unlike Prince Philip who loves to eat and would stand and talk food all day.” The Queen is thought to mostly opt for cereal at breakfast, Kellogg’s, Quaker Oats and Weetabix all hold royal warrants. However, sometimes she does decide to have toast and marmalade. Mr McGrady said that apart from breakfast, the Queen has a no starch rule when she is dining alone. The Queen was at Ascot last week where she presented the winning troops at the final on Sunday.
