UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the suspected attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, speaking at the United Nations Security Council meeting on cooperation between the United Nations and the League of Arab States in New York City.

"If there is something the world cannot afford, it is a major confrontation in the Gulf region," said Guterres, adding that "facts must be established, and responsibilities clarified."

The Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit also denounced the attacks, calling them "dangerous developments" and asking for "international solidarity" to maintain the "security of the Arab region."

Reportedly, two ships owned by companies in Norway and Singapore were attacked south of the Strait of Hormuz through which almost a fifth of the world's oil exports pass through.

The latest incident comes amid spiralling tensions between Tehran and Washington DC, which has pointed the finger at Iran over attacks on four vessels last month.

At the request of the United States, the Security Council is reportedly scheduled to meet behind closed doors later today to discuss the situation.MANDATORY CREDIT: UNTV
