The common feature of festivities is jumping over bonfires which came from pagan cultures where it was believed to ward off evil spirits. Participants often make a wish while jumping but sometimes they overestimate their skills and end up landing in bonfire and being helped by firefighters.
The traditional festival coincides with midsummer celebrations around the world just days after the Summer solstice on June 21
