As the title states, when identifying plants, we usually compare its appearance against known specimens. Usually against a reference website.
Plants, like any other organism, are defined by the traits in the DNA that make up their genotype. The way these traits manifest in their appearance is called their phenotype. Now unless you have access to a facility where you can sequence their DNA and compare genetic information, you're stuck with comparing the phenotype like the rest of us.
In this video we discuss genotypes, phenotypes, and how I use them to identify plants.
