Germany wants to "contribute effective assistance as quickly as possible" to help deal with the fires raging in the Amazon, government spokesperson Steffen Seibert said in Berlin on Wednesday. He made the comments at a press conference at which issues relating to Ukraine were also discussed.

"We want to give all possible contributions that we have, and that will be coordinated by Brussels," he stated.

Seibert also hailed what he described as "progress" towards establishing peace in east Ukraine's Stanytsia Luhanska, saying that the situation there has improved for local residents in recent weeks.

The government spokesperson also noted that while a concrete date had not yet been set for a meeting of the Normandy Four on Ukraine, such a gathering was indeed planned and "should also be as well prepared as possible."

German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Adebahr meanwhile said Berlin would continue to monitor the trial of RIA Novosti Ukraine editor-in-chief Kirill Vyshynsky, after he was released on bail in Ukraine. She went on to affirm that "Germany commits itself worldwide to the freedom of the press in all countries."
