In current events today, Sahithi Pingali spoke to NowThis News about her app that tests drinking water and water pollution safety and how she's empowering citizen science. Young scientist Sahithi Pingali is harnessing tech to detect water pollution inspired by an environmental issue in her own backyard.

Pingali: 'I can remember, like, as long as I’ve lived in Bangalore, every time we drove past Varthur lake, which is like famously, like, the stinkiest lake in Bangalore, we would slam the bus windows closed and be like, ‘everybody hold your nose!’ But that was it. Like, that was our engagement with the problem.

And then years later, on a school field trip, I went to the lake and had to interview the people who lived there.

So, like, being on but, like, being there and talking to people who had to live with that every day and seeing somebody literally taking a bucket of water from that lake and use it to water tomatoes.
I was like, this is crazy. That was kind of what pushed me to action.'

Sahithi Pingali developed and crowdsourced a water monitoring app. Users can test the safety levels of fresh water and upload their results onto a map. Anyone can then compare the health and contamination levels of bodies of water around the globe. Pingali has been featured in the documentary Inventing Tomorrow.
