How Halo Used Real Religion To Enhance Its Story

I know religion is almost always a touchy subject, but I have always been impressed by how the Halo series has been able to use religion to tell it's story. As a fan of classic sci fi I know that handling subjects like religion have added a great deal to their medium, so why is it so rare in videogames?
