It happens so that most unusual discoveries happen accidentally. A lot of ancient artifacts were found by simple farmers digging their land not archeologists sweating away trying to find bits and pieces here and there. You re watching Fact or Fiction and today we will tell you how a farmer accidentally reviled a very old secret. We will also tell you about a few other stories about some unexpected findings that made a few people infinitely wealthy.
Ancient tomb
In the summer of 2018, a farmer from a small village in Crete was doing his usual routine - he was looking after his precious olive trees. Suddenly he noticed something unusual on the ground. It was so unusual that he decided to invite experts to check on it. Experts said that the object discovered was in fact the answer to the most important question about the history of Greece, which was discussed by the scientific community for many years. You re probably wondering what it was? So it all started when an unsuspecting man parked his tractor in the shade under one of the olive trees but even before he got out of seat, part of his tractor fell into a hole in the ground. Luckily the man managed to pull the tractor out, and started studying the treacherous hole. It seemed that the cause of the failure was a leak in one of the irrigation pipes that were put underground to irrigate the plantation. The leak seemed to havespoiled the soil. The farmer decided he should examine the hole better and had a look inside.
Soon he figured that the pit is much larger than it seemed - there was a real limestone cave underground, it went far down and was at least two and a half meters deep. The farmer decided to seek out help of local historians and specialists of ancient heritage, who sent a team of archaeologists to the place where it all happened. It didn`t take much time for experts to understand that the farmer had discovered a real ancient burial. There were three niches engraved on one of the walls of the cave. In one of them, archaeologists found a coffin that contained the remains of a man surrounded by a dozen food and drink clay vessels. There was another cave in the room where a coffin with dozen different containers of multi-colored clay was found. But who were those men buried in the cave? Local farmers, members of a noble family, or warrior heroes? The clay vessels found in the cave could answer this question. Historians noted they were of high quality and skill - a poor rural man could hardly afford that. High-quality pottery indicated that the people who were resting in the cave were super wealthy.
A number of tests confirmed that the findings belong to the late Minoan period - somewhere between 1400 and 1200 BC. The men, who died about 3,400 years ago, were most likely buried according to the custom of the rich Minoans. Even before the Minoans were weakened by a natural disaster and other people were forced to leave these lands, they represented a very influential ethnic group. During this period, the rich and noble members of society were buried in tombs they called tolos – it`s a kind of a large stone hall in a shape of a hive. But the limestone cave, found by our farmer, didn`t look like a hive at all. And that`s what made the scientists conclude that because the tomb looked fancy, those buried in it most likely belonged to a cast of wealthy local landowners with a taste for luxury. Scientifically valuable skeletons were immediately sent to the laboratory – and maybe some analysis will help to shed light on the origin of the Minoan civilization. The very fact that the burial place exists in the area proves that the Minoans once lived in this part of Crete, which many historians thought wasn`t true.
