Persuasion techniques in sales usually focus on the wrong things (In my opinion) when it comes to training around how to be influential.
They say how to influence others is to “use this tonal pattern”, “stand in this way and mirror the other person like this”, “master this NLP technique”, “use this closing strategy” and on and on and on. I’m not saying that all of those things don’t have merit or value, of course they do. But the problem with focusing on those things as the MAIN or ONLY areas to work on when learning how to become influential, is kind of like polishing a turd.
Which human beings in your life do you feel most connected with and most influenced by? Who do you know that could request ANYTHING of you, and you’d do it pretty much without question?
Why is that? Is it because they’re master manipulators? Or is it for other reasons that are nothing to do with icky “sales techniques”? It’s almost certainly to do with other reasons isn’t it.
You probably trust them unconditionally. You probably KNOW that they have your interests at heart. You probably KNOW that they’d do the same for you, you probably believe in them, feel a connection with them, like them and so on. What part of that has anything to do with NLP, tonality, closing strategies, or them being really good at “getting” you to do anything?
When this person makes a request, it occurs as an opportunity and you WANT to do what they’re asking right? You may not LIKE doing it (Don’t confuse this with every request being wonderful and amazing), but the payoff of doing it is far more important than whether or not you like it right? It’s WORTH it.
So if you want to know how to be more persuasive and influential, you have to become that person for everyone around you in your life. And you can’t fabricate that.
You have to genuinely start altering the way you look at and relate to others around you, and the way you look at and relate to yourself.
