DAILY DOSE | Likud lawmaker Gideon Sa’ar challenged on Thursday the head of his own party, Benjamin Netanyahu, by calling for primaries over the Likud’s leadership, and stating that he could form Israel’s next government -- thus putting an end to its year-long political stasis.
Speaking at the Jerusalem Post Diplomatic Conference in Jerusalem, the prominent Likud figure said “If a new government won’t be formed and we go to new elections, it will not be reasonable that the prime minister will be successful in forming a government after a third election, so I think the necessary thing to do... is to set a Likud leadership primary.”
As cited by the Jerusalem Post, Sa’ar added: “I think I will be able to form a government, and I think I will be able to unify the country and the nation.”
Reports emerged on Wednesday that incumbent Prime Minister Netanyahu sought to cancel the Likud primaries in case a third election takes place, receiving backing from many Likud members.
But Sa’ar comments set a potential rift in the ranks of the Likud. Culture and Sport Minister Miri Regev posted a video on social media in which she says: “He who weakens the home, cannot win outside. As in most parties that do not engage in primaries, because they realize [we’re in] the same ongoing election campaign, we in the Likud should also stay united behind Netanyahu.”
At the conference, Sa’ar was also asked about the soon to-be-announced decision of Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit concerning the corruption cases engulfing the premier. “We should wait in patience,” the parliamentarian replied.
