I'M ALLERGIC TO PHONES, SHARE MY STORY

I'M ALLERGIC TO PHONES, SHARE MY STORY Before I start my story, there is a thing or two you should know about phone phobia, or telephonophobia- it is usually considered to be something that only those with social anxiety disorder deal with on a daily basis, but the truth is it can be anyone - even you, or me. So if you have it, it is okay and you are not alone. Admitting the problem is the most essential, and by far the hardest step in starting to fight a long battle.
As I have mentioned, overcoming phone phobia is by no means not an easy thing to do. I know it because I used to hate phones myself. If I could, I would send letters and emails to deal with work, trying everything I could to avoid making phone calls, but the phone calls were always inevitable in the end.
Hey there! My name is Daniel and this is my story, about being allergic to the telephone.
For my 14th birthday, my parents gave me a phone. To be honest I was always curious about them and wanted to own one. I had always seen other people using phones, but never had the chance to try using one myself. I started sweating when I opened up the outer wrapping. I just could not bring myself to touch it. I felt a sudden surge of anxiety, and stormed off to my room.
My parents had no idea why I did that, or why it happened. I didn’t know either. I tried to keep my phone as far from me for days, but my parents insisted that it should be used - after all, they had spent good money on it. They kept it on my studying desk, and I used to stare at it from my bed.
One Saturday night, my parents had to attend a housewarming party without me. . They were a bit late for one reason or another, and my mother called me on my phone to let me know about it.
I really didn't want to answer the phone when it rang - and my heart suddenly felt like it dropped all the way down to my stomach like a weight. I ran to my bed, wrapped myself up in the bedsheets, and began crying. When my parents came home that evening, I told them about it. The next day, we went to a therapist.
That’s when I found out that I suffered from Telephonophobia.
I wasn’t brave enough or able to deal with my phobia by myself until my therapist encouraged me, and promised to help me through it. We had been in touch for over half a year and not a single phone call was made between us. At her insistence, , I told her more about my phobia about phone in an email and she sent me this reply: “You can’t get better at doing something unless you’re doing it, and you won’t get comfortable with something unless you put yourself outside of your comfort zone, braving uncomfortable situations that you don’t like. .”
She organised a schedule, and told me that if I could talk on the phone every single day for a whole month, things would get better. She even volunteered to call me on Hicall every morning, so I could tell her something about that day, during a 3 minute call, regardless of the 12 hour time difference. Because of her, I started looking forward to hearing my phone’s ringtone, hoping to see that familiar number of hers show up. The time flew by quickly, and it was the last day of our month long agreement. But, I hadn’t heard a thing from her all day. And it occurred to me: “Wait, I know her number. Why don’t I take some initiative and call her back?” I double checked the number, and then made the call.
Time seemed exceptionally slow when my shaky fingers were dialing her number and 5 seconds later, I heard the voice I had been dreaming about all night.
Time seemed to slow down to a halt when I was shakily dialling her number, and with shaking fingers, 5 seconds later, I heard the voice I had been dreaming about all night, on the other end of the receiver. “Hello..” She answered gently .
“.H..Hi, This is Daniel. Good morning, ” I stuttered and mumbled through the sentence. Despite it, you have no idea just how happy I was to hear her voice.
“Daniel, I know who you are, I call you every night you know, remember.” She giggled, “I’m so happy for you! Your first call in a while! How do you feel?” She asked with cheer.
“Yeah, I’m really happy for me too!” Seriously? “Anyway, you didn’t call last night, so I’m calling to see if everything is alright with you.”
“I’m good, Daniel, I have never been better,”
“Great, bye.” And my credit ran out just in time.
The weekend was lovely and we kept in touch after that, and yes, it was via Hicall.
