South Korea's sleep industry is booming -- from mattress and bedding makers, to sleep consultants and self-help gurus. According to the Korea Sleep Industry Association's 2019 report, the sleep-health industry grew from $240 million in 2012 to $1.7 billion in 2016. It is expected to be worth $2.6 billion by the end of 2019. OECD research has shown that South Koreans sleep 40 minutes less than the global average, due to long working hours and heavy workloads. About 568,000 of them suffered sleep disorders in 2018, an increase from 416,000 in 2014.
