ODD BIRD (full transcription): The other day, I was standing in my kitchen area,
no less than four feet from the table, wary of
the cauliflower juices streaming down my chin,
worried they’d end up on my laptop (much to my chagrin).
But I was watching Ozark on this laptop, wearing
non-toe-socks with my flip flops.
And the thought then struck me if this informality
was anything close to others’ normality.
Am I normal?
I’m actually often struck with this same sentiment,
question everything against my best judgement.
Every time I find myself doing something strange,
I ask “Am I normal?” and wonder what’s the range
for acceptability of these odd situations?
Should I resist all my ODD BIRD temptations?
But why hide? Why act like NOT ME
when these weird things just feel like A LOT ME.
The ironic thing is our quirks by far
are the parts about us that make us who we are.
While we might wish our oddness was waning,
others find our quirks intriguing, entertaining.
These ODD BIRD actions, though they can be alarming,
are ultimately, truly, really not harming
anyone. So don’t worry about whether
or not you fit in, we’ll be odd birds together.
