A famous ancient philosopher, Heraclitus, has written enormously about change. He noted that cold things grow hot, the hot cools, the wet dries, the parched moistens etc. He said “everything is constantly shifting, changing, and becoming something other to what it was before”. Change is a gift from God. This is essential to be noted in this second week of Advent, because this Christmas should indicate some change – both in the way we perceive it, and in the way we celebrate it.
Before the arrival of Jesus on the ministry scene, John the Baptist proclaimed repentance and many come to him and baptism was a symbol of this change. Yet, to a certain group of people who came to be baptized and ‘display’ change (Mt 3:7-10), he was critical of them and chided them saying that their repentance needs to be shown in ‘fruits’. Why should we discuss change, when we are preparing for a ‘celebration’? The reason is obvious – Jesus came to change the way we think, judge, act, and live. Christmas is about deepening the needed changes.
