Peace be to you all (AsSalama'laikum)! The temperatures are plummeting in Washington, D.C. Even though this is the capital of the world's superpower, we have a growing number of homeless people. These folks come from various backgrounds. Many have succumbed to poorly-controlled mental health issues😣, drugs💉 (often, from self-medicating), hard financial times💸 or new-re-entrants from a poorly-managed prison system. We COULD easily be any of these people had fate dealt us a different hand. I spoke to some of the people living in these "tent towns " who have told me the things they can use besides money: 1) hand warmers, 2) winter clothes, 3) blankets/sleeping bags, 4) warm drinks like coffee and of course, 5) respect. Homelessness is a big health issue which is just going to get worse with the skyrocketing cost of living, fall in health care infrastructure and, dysfunctional prison system.
