Mourners gathered today to say goodbye to Thomas Valva, the 8-year-old who died after his father Michael allegedly forced him to sleep in a freezing garage in Long Island, US. Michael Valva and his fiance now face murder charges. Thomas, who was autistic, reportedly collapsed and died from hypothermia during the cold night of January 17, as temperatures outside the unheated garage plunged to -7C. His mother Justyna Zubko-Valva carried one of her surviving child as pallbearers carried the boy's coffin into St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church. She told CBS2 that her son's death had been "preventable" and claimed to have filed "numerous complaint" regarding Thomas's treatment over three years. CBS reported that Bishop Andrzej Zgelszewski told mourners: “I hope that the message of this tragedy will teach so many hearts and so many lives. "Just simply because we have to do something about it. “Another human life was lost because of our human negligence.” The mother bent down in the church beside her children Anthony, 10, and Andrew, 6, to kiss the coffin. She claims to have 'unlawfully' lost custody of Thomas and her other two sons in 2017 amid a bitter divorce. More than 100 people attended the funeral where Thomas was buried in a white and gold casket. The bishop went on to suggest that both social services and the community had failed the young boy, the latter by electing the officials who create the system. He urged those present not to forget that children should be loved, embraced and hugged. Both Valva and his fiance, Angela Pollina, have been charged with second degree murder in connection with Thomas's death. The dad was a NYPD traffic officer but was forced to hand in his gun and badge following the death. The funeral was paid for by donations to a Go Fund Me page which raised $50,000 for the family.
