हाल हे में बोस्टन स्थित हेल्थ इफेक्ट्स इंस्टीट्यूट (Health Effects Institute- HEI) द्वारा तैयार की गई स्टेट ऑफ ग्लोबल एयर रिपोर्ट 2019 में बताया गया है कि 2017 में वायु प्रदूषण के कारण उत्पन्न बीमारियों से 1.2 मिलियन भारतीयों की मौत हो गई।

वायु प्रदूषण वैश्विक स्तर पर मृत्यु दर के लिये वैश्विक जोखिम वाले कारकों में पाँचवे स्थान पर है, जो केवल व्यावहारिक और उपापचयिक (Metabolic) कारकों के कारण अधिक है, जिसमें दोषपूर्ण आहार, उच्च रक्तचाप, तंबाकू का सेवन और उच्च रक्त शर्करा प्रमुख है।
