Shoppers react to new tariffs on Chinese goods

Shoppers react to new tariffs on Chinese goods (2 Aug 2019) President Donald Trump has announced that the U.S. will place tariffs on nearly all Chinese products headed toward America beginning next month.

This means that for the first time, Chinese toys, clothing, electronics like iPhones will now face penalties.

New Orleans resident Shara Johnson says she's not surprised – and expects to feel at least some impact on the consumer side.

"Higher class might not notice as fast as we do, but lower class, middle class – yeah, we're gonna know off top, for sure. For sure, for sure," Johnson said.

Johnson said she doesn't have any children of her own but plenty of nieces, nephews and siblings that she'll be helping with back-to-school shopping and, later, buying Christmas presents for.

"A lot of people have materialistic values, and budgets. Gonna have to shift that," Johnson said.

In a Thursday afternoon Twitter thread, the president said his administration will put a 10 percent tax on $300 billion in Chinese goods starting September 1. That would encompass almost all of the remaining products the US has yet to place tariffs on, effectively meaning there will soon be no free trade between the two countries.

That will add to the 25 percent tariffs on $250 billion worth of other Chinese products the president announced in May.

Many shoppers should have back-to-school shopping done by the time the penalties go into effect next month.

"I have three high schoolers and one middle-schooler. So, yeah, I'm preparing for it. I'm really, really preparing for it," said Dimara Davis, while loading bags into the trunk of her car at a Walmart parking lot.

But it could lead to higher prices for Chinese goods later this year, like around the holidays.

"It would affect a lot," Davis said: "It would affect a lot, because it would hurt a lot of people," Davis added.
