One person was injured in the crash, but police said those injuries are not life-threatening
The Phoenix Police Department tweeted out the hair-raising video of the near miss, which happened on Oct. 14.

The couple with the stroller had just entered the crosswalk at the intersection of 53rd Avenue and Indian School Road, on a green light, when a red-light runner came careening right directly toward them.

Thankfully, a Chevy Cruz entered the intersection at the same time and blocked the impact, and the couple and stroller were not hit.

Police say the red-light runner has been identified as 23-year-old Ernesto Otanez Oveso.

Phoenix police say Oveso and his female passenger took off running after the crash.

A witness actually followed Oveso, trying to keep him in sight. Oveso noticed the car and told the 25-year-old man to stop following him. Police say he then pulled a knife and jabbed at the driver through his window. As the witness pulled away, police say Oveso stabbed one of the doors on the car, "making a hole in the door."

Officers later say they spotted him "stuffing the knife in his right front pocket."

Police say they also found a gun in his Jeep.

He faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of weapon by a prohibited person.

The woman with Oveso at the time of the crash was not located.

The driver of that Chevy Cruz was a 27-year-old woman. While she did suffer injuries, they were not life-threatening.

"In this case, when you look at the video, it's nothing short of a miracle that the family the renegade was barreling towards didn't get struck. They could have suffered injuries that were certainly serious if not life threatening," said Sgt. Tommy Thompson with Phoenix Police.
An angel in the form of a Chevy Cruz may have saved the lives of a couple pushing a stroller through a Phoenix crosswalk at 53rd Ave & Indian School.

The innocent driver will be OK. The red-light runner was arrested for DUI.

Car crashes into suspected DUI driver before he almost hit couple

PHOENIX (WSVN) — An accused DUI driver who ran a red light and nearly ran down a couple pushing a stroller was stopped at the last moment by another vehicle that happened to drive through the intersection.

Phoenix Police shared video from Oct. 14 that shows a couple pushing a stroller through a crosswalk.

As they cross, a Jeep is seen running the red light and heading in the couple’s direction when a Chevy Cruz that had the right of way hits the Jeep, preventing it from hitting the family.

Police said the driver of the Jeep, 23-year-old Ernesto Otanez Oveso and a woman in the car with him fled the scene on foot.

Officers said a witness followed them. Oveso told them to stop and even stabbed one of the doors on the witness’ car.

Oveso was eventually caught and charged with DUI and aggravated assault. Police also said he faces a charge for prohibited possession of a gun.

The woman in the car with Oveso was not found.

Police said the 27-year-old woman who drove the Chevrolet Cruz that stopped the Jeep from hitting the couple suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
