Hello, everyone, I am doctor Amit Kumar Dey, I am a consultant diabetologist. Today we will be discussing about a very important diabetes related complications, that is diabetic foot and its related disorders and problems.
In India we have about 60 million people suffering from diabetes out of which there are 2 million people who suffers from diabetic foot and its related complications. Diabetic foot disorder primarily includes diabetic neuropathy and the peripheral artery disease which develops in the feet.
In my clinical practice, we often find patients coming to us with complaints like pain, tingling sensation, and burning sensation in their feet. The problems are in diabetic foot problems, once it sets in it’s very difficult to manage and treat. The first is biothesiometry which is a vibration sensation test, which is carried out to check any peripheral neuropathy in the feet. Second is an ankle-brachial index which is done to detect at an early stage if there is any peripheral artery disease which is developing in the feet. It also helps us to check the blood flow in the limbs of the patients. And lastly there is 3D pressure mapping which is done of the feet which tells us about the significant pressure points in the feet and also predicts where those areas will be prone to develop any callus or corn.

Curafoot has helped us clinicians in providing comprehensive diabetes foot care to our patients in our clinical practice. Starting from the modalities of the screening tests with bio-thesiometry, ankle-brachial index, 3D pressure mapping sensation, followed by the proper guidance to the patients regarding their basic foot hygiene and footcare. Supportive podiatric care, basic pedicure facilities are made available to the patients and of course in complicated diabetic foot, patients where there is a deep sited ulcer, they also help us in offloading the ulcer. Specially with the help of 3D pressure mapping, they help us in advising the patients, customized insoles, which the patients can wear inside their covered shoes and this would help them in avoiding the complications of diabetic foot.

I often advice five basic steps of footcare to my patients.
1. wash your feet with very lukewarm water or normal temperature water everyday at bedtime. And after washing the feet clean them with soft towel. 2. Make sure that you are cleaning the interdigital spaces properly so that there is no accumulation of moisture in them.
3. Chip your toe nails short. Always examine the under surface of the foot for any corn or thick skin or any callus formation which can develop. Apply any basic moisturising lotion on the upper and under surface of the feet everyday before going to bed.
4. Never walk barefoot. Always and always wear covered shoes, especially when you are going outside.
5. Every diabetic patient must undertake their foot screening test once every year.
So, it’s very important for every diabetes patient to be aware of the disease, it’s possible complications that can come in their way. Take preventive measures, eat healthy, follow a disciplined lifestyle, exercise on a regular basis and most importantly take care of your feet. We care, so we share. Thank you.
